Thirteen Things Shelley Would Like to Do/Get Done This Summer

Since today is the official first day of summer...I thought I would post a TT of my plans/things I would like to do this summer. It's a laundry list of sorts.

1. I mentioned this before, but I want to get a bike on the road...and use it as my main mode of transportation. One, I would be active...and two, save on that ever so expensive gas.
2. I want to be proactive in being outside more. Even if it is just going for a walk during work and when I get out of work. I want to spend more time outside of these lovely walls.
3. I want to make more plans for my weekends. I tend to do a lot of relaxing and watching movies, etc. They tend to be really lazy weekends. I don't want that anymore. I want to go to parks, go for walks, go hiking, etc.
4. I want to lose 20 lbs this summer. I am sick of caring around this extra weight that I know I don't need and that I know is holding me back.
5. The last couple of months, I have been pretty motivated while watching VH1's Celebrity Fit Club. I am a much bigger fan of that show than sham shows like The Biggest Loser. So, I am going to adopt the diet by Dr. Ian...and I am going to give the Fat Smash Diet a try. I figure, I like natural foods...and obviously don't mind not eating meat, so I think it might just work like magic.
6. I am also going to start working out like mad again. I plan on starting the Power 90 program again once my roomie starts working nights...which should be the next couple of weeks.
7. I plan on going to the Farmer's Market every Saturday that I can. I can't wait to get all the fresh veggies...and sometimes fruit. I went last week and didn't find anything I really wanted, but soon...all those veggies will be pouring in.
8. I want to hang out with my friends more this summer. I have a great group of friends and we are super supportive of one another, but we don't hang out a lot. So, I want to hang more...even if it is just having dinner or going to a movie or whatever. And hey...maybe I could make a hiking trip (an easy hike) and invite some of those friends along.
9. Speaking of movies...I want to go see a movie or two which is coming out this summer. My roomie and I were talking about going to the drive-in, which I think would be super fun.
10. This summer, I want to look at practical ways of becoming more green. I want to recycle better than I am. I want to look at reducing energy use and cost. I think it's something important and also something that can save me a penny or two down the line.
11. I want to keep the apartment clean this summer...and beyond. I am going to make a cleaning schedule and make sure one room is clean per day. If I keep on top of that, it shouldn't be an issue at all..for the place to be clean. Right now, it's not bad...but it isn't as neat as I would like it. And...my bedroom is a mess, so that needs to be cleaned stat.
12. To keep on the cleaning kick...I want to clean out my car and keep it clean. I tend to clutter up my car like I do everything else in my life. It ends up having a bunch of junk in it...and therefore, have to re-arrange everything if I go shopping or am giving a bunch of friends rides, etc. So...I want to clean my car and keep it clean.
13. And the last thing...it even though I will be working full time through the summer...to have as much fun as possible. I longingly remember those school days of spending the summers just enjoying the time off...and going to the park...or the Great Escape, etc. So...in the free time that I do have, I want to relive those summer off experiences.

Thirteen Ways Shelley Plans On Saving $$$$$!

I am already a pretty frugal person, but there is always room for improvement, eh? I am going to list 13 ways in which I can make a dollar go even further in hopes of continuing to pay off my school loans and have that monkey off my back!

1. This one makes me sad, but it needs to be done. I am going to cancel my membership to the YMCA. It costs about $40 per month and to be honest...right now I am not using it. Plus, I have about a bajillion workout tapes at home and have been using walking as my main form of exercise right now, so I can do that anywhere. So...bye bye YMCA! Savings: $40/month.
2. I am going to change my Blockbuster Access program from 3 movies out at a time to 2 movies out at a time. One...with the free movies you can exchange, I am finding it hard to watch that many movies a week and two, it saves me money, not a lot, but money. Savings: $3/month.
3. Cancelling the Netflix subscription I have. I have been holding onto it because they carry some movies that Blockbuster does not, but well...who cares? And, I actually don't even need to cancel it, I can put the account on hold for 3 months and then cancel it, so no harm, no foul. Savings: $5/month.
4. As said this in an earlier post, I am going to be a Nazi about my credit card spending. I am only going to spend money on my card on gas and groceries...that's it. Nothing else! I always pay it off each month, but it's just too easy to justify charging a pizza on my card, etc. We'll have to see how much savings it actually adds up to, but I think it will be pretty good. Savings: ????
5. I also said this in an earlier post (money has been on my mind lately)...I am going to give myself $20 cash each time I get paid and that is the only money I can use for things such as going out to dinner, going to the drive-ins, etc. Once that money is gone...that's it until the next time I get paid. I've done this before and it is pretty effective. Savings: ????
6. I did this earlier in the year and I am going to get back to it. At the end of each week, I am going to empty the change out of my wallet and put it in a jar. I won't really miss those pennies and dimes and quarters (alright, I might miss the quarters)...but they will really add up over time.
7. I recently started shopping around insurance companies...and found that my company is not giving me the best rate, so I am switching. I found out that Geico quoted me at about $85 less per 6 month policy. That's a huge difference. I am going to call them this week and make sure that the policy is what it is...and then I am switching. Why pay more for coverage you hope to never have to use? Savings: Approx. $28/month
8. I hate doing this one, but I am going to do it. I have said before how much I HATE Wal-Mart...I have coined them "Devil-Mart" because I loathe them so much. But well...I hate them, but love their low prices. I did my grocery shopping there last month and compared it to the local grocery store and I easily saved 30-40 bucks on everything I bought. That's insane. So, I am going to do my grocery shopping there for a while...to save some much needed change. Savings: maybe $30/month.
9. I am always going to use my AAA gas card when buying gas. I have been doing this for about a year now and I am going to continue it. When I use the card to buy gas, the card gives me 5% cashback. So, when I am paying $3.15.gallon...that is a savings of about 15 cents per gallon. I have a 12 gallon gas tank, so that means that when I fill up...I am saving about 2 dollars. If only gas weren't so expensive, but alas...oil runs the world. *grumbles* Savings: $2-4/month.
10. Speaking of the evil cost of gasoline. I have had it, so I am going to get my brother's old bike out of the garage at my dad's house...fix it up...and start biking to work. I only live about 3 miles from my job and if I start biking it, I would only have to fill up once a month instead of twice. Plus, it's nice exercise. I plan on looking at the bike this weekend and work on getting it road worthy. Once I start using it, it would save me one tank per month...at least. Savings: Approx. $30/month.
11. I am going to start using coupons...buying things when they are on sale...and going to the clearance sales, etc. I have never been someone who clips coupons out of the paper, etc. It never seemed worth it to me, but I am at least going to take a look and see if there are things that I would buy anyway. Here is my word of warning about coupons...I happen to believe that coupons convince you to buy things you don't need, etc. So...don't do that. Only buy things that you would have bought anyways. But, I am going to look at the sale flyers and also do clothes shopping when they are sales...go to thrift stores, etc. I don't spend a lot of money anyways...but sales can even make my dollar stretch farther.
12. This one is something I am usually pretty good at...usually. I am going to bring my lunch to work everyday and not buy lunch out. When we buy lunch out it ranges from $3-7 dollars depending on where we go. That's just ridiculous...and if you eat out 2-3 times per week...that's $9-21 per week. I can just as easily bring in my salad and snacks. Now, if I do decide to eat out for lunch, etc...it needs to come out of my $20 per pay period...no exception. Savings: Figuring how often I eat out right now...the savings would be about $10/month.
13. And the last thing I am going to do...is ask people's advice on how to save money. I think everyone has their own little tricks, etc. So, any advice out there? What kind of things do you do to save money? What things have you heard, but well...aren't using?? Anything? Bueller? Bueller?

And let's add it up...the projected savings per month if I do all these things would be...

Savings per month: $148-150/month. Seeing that number really motivates me to make all those changes above!!!!

Thursday Thirteen #32

The Last Thirteen Movies Shelley Has Seen and What She Thinks of Them.

This one should be easy because I list all the movies I have seen over there on the left...oops...which makes me realize I need to update the last couple of movies I have seen.

1. Deliver Us From Evil: It was a great movie and horrible all at the same time. It was a great documentary, but just well...terrifying to watch. I was shocked to see the actions of the Catholic church, the blunt honest of the priest being interviews and how the church basically rewarded anyone who kept "the secret." Great movie, but well...it completely broke my heart.
2. Good German: I liked this movie, well...kind of. I thought it was an interesting story and well, I like George Clooney and all. But, I did think it was pretty slow going at points...and if I had been tired, I completely would have slept through the whole movie. It definitelywas made in the old time genre look...and that was kinda cool, but at the same time I desperately wanted an action sequence.
3. The Dead Girl: I liked this one too. It starts with someone finding a dead girl...and then the rest of the movie is really mini-movies telling how each character is connected to the dead girl. The final segment is actually the dead girl's story of her final day. I thought it was really compelling and felt that Brittany Murphy, Kerry Washington and Marcia Gay Harden did fabulous jobs. Check it out.
4. Deja vu: This movie stars Denzel Washington...hummina...as a ATF agent investigating a terrorist bomb that went off on a ferry boat. During his investigation, he finds a way to watch what happened in the past and then change things in the past. I thought the movie was good..except...I saw Back to the Future...so I know that you can't go back in time and not have it mess with the current timeline, etc. So...Emmett Brown would be having a fit with some of the time travel leaps...pun intended! *winks*
5. The Painted Veil: I adore Edward Norton...I think he is fabulous and talented...and well, dreamy. I basically think that Ed can do no wrong. This movie was just beautiful to watch....and was a great story about two people really growing to love one another.
6. Breaking And Entering: I liked this movie because I felt the storylines were really quite complex. It's about this kid who is paid to break into this one building and steal their computers, LCD screens, etc. And the guy who owns the building (Jude Law) then becomes obsessed with figuring out who it is...and in the process starts having an affair with the boy's mother. The story continues from there and the two families get all mixed up together. It's definitely a british movie...and quite enjoyable.
7. Aurora Borealis: I loved this movie. It has a great cast, Donald Sutherland, Joshie Jackson, Louise Fletcher, Juliette Lewis. It was never released to theatres or at least not to a broad release, so I snagged when it came out on DVD. It's about Josh's character who takes a job as a handy-man in his grandfather's building, Sutherland. Josh is a pretty low key, goal-less guy who is still haunted by his father's death as a child. Sutherland's character is suffering from Parkinson's and dementia...and slowly losing his ability to function. I just thought it was a great movie highlighting what it means to be family and the secrets every family holds. Plus, Sutherland was just phenomenal as the grandfather...a true pleasure to watch.
8. Music and Lyrics: It's a movie with Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant, how could it not be cute?? Basically if you look "cute as a button" up in the dictionary, there is a pic of this movie.
9. Catch and Release: I liked this movie...love the cast, mainly Jennifer Garner and Kevin Smith. I think the part was just perfect for Jennifer, since it seemed to embody who she is. I love Kevin Smith, but there was no acting in this part...at all...he just played himself, wardrobe and all. It was cute though...very forumalic, but well, did you expect anything else?
10. Little Children: This movie was interesting and disturbing. Plus, I love all things Kate Winslet, so I wanted to see the film. It basically is the story of a small town and all the dysfunctional sexual relationships that are both said and unsaid. There is a convicted sex offender in town, who is constantly under the watchful eye of the community action group. Kate Winslet's character is in an unhappy marriage...and begins an affair with another married dad in his play group. I was really intrigued by this movie...thought it really showed the complexities of relationships and the consequences of choices.
11. Alpha Dog: Hated this movie. Hated! I thought it might be decent, even though it starred Justin Timberlake. Actually, I thought he was decent, but the movie was not. The basic plot is a group of thug wannabees are owed money by another thug wannabee, so they kidnap his brother as payment and things go steadily wrong from there. My main complaint, the director seemed to think the only way to show emotion or drama is to have the actors scream their dialogue. The movie is just dreadful. Do not see, even if it is for free...cause you will never get those 2 hours of your life back.
12. Dreamgirls: Good movie...loved the music and the storyline of striving for your dreams in the face of adversity. I did fall asleep in the middle, but it was because I was exhausted...not telling of the movie at all. I think Jennifer Hudson definitely deserved all the awards she got...except she should have been nominated as Best Actress, not Best Supporting...since she carries the movie.
13. Slingshot: I rented it because it has an interesting cast...David Arquette, Balty Getty, Thora Birch, Julianna Marguilles, etc. It's about these two con-men who seduce women and then clean them out...and when Balty gets involved with conning Julianna...he meets her daughter, Thora, and suddenly it is about more than just a con. I expected more...and it just didn't deliver.

Alright folks...there ya have it, my drivel about the last 13 movies I have seen. What's the last movie you saw????

Thirteen Things Shelley Thinks about the Drama with Rosie and Elizabeth Yesterday on The View

I know it seems like a hugely cheesy topic, but it is something that everyone seems to be talking about, so I thought I would make a TT out of it.

1. One, I will start off with a full disclosure statement. I love Rosie. I think the world of her. I watched her show religiously and have been watching The View religiously since she started on the show. I am a fan.
2. Just in case people don't know, this is what went down on the show yesterday. Rosie and Elizabeth got into a fight about some comments Rosie made about Iraq last week. Fox News stated that they felt Rosie said that the troops were terrorists. Rosie asked Elizabeth on Monday if she felt that was what Rosie was saying...and Elizabeth didn't really answer. That obviously hurt Rosie's feelings...and she shared that with Elizabeth on the show and then it erupted into a firestorm of an argument.
3. That argument...I wish they had gone to commercial because it was just so horrible to watch. It was like a car accident...it's horrible and sadly, you just can't look away.
4. I think both Rosie and Elizabeth share blame for what happened on the show. And, I have felt it is a long time coming. Both women are very polarizing when it comes to political views and it blew up.
5. I actually believe Rosie was wrong first, in all honesty. Rosie's feelings were hurt and instead of talking to Elizabeth about that in private, off the show...she chose to confront her about it on national television. She talked about how Elizabeth is her friend and that she didn't feel defended by a friend...but in my mind, a friend doesn't do that to another friend...confronting them in front of the world, no matter how hurt she was.
6. I, in no way, believe that Rosie felt in her heart that the troops are terrorists. She wasn't saying that...at all. However, I can see how some people...especially those on the other end of the political spectrum...took it that way. I think that Rosie needs to realize how her words can be perceived...and take ownership of that. What I believe Rosie meant is...that to people in Muslim nations...the actions of the current Administration (not the troops...but the people sending them into harms way)....could be seen in the mystical "terrorist" light. She is not saying it is right....but that the ideology exists out there. Anyways...not the point.
7. I could see immediately that Elizabeth was on the defensive. I think she was geniunely surprised at how hurt Rosie's feelings were...and that it bothered her. I also think that she was angered at how this was going down. I tend not to support any of the politics that come out of Elizabeth's mouth...but I felt for her...until...
8. I felt the Elizabeth lashed out and took a huge, low blow when she made a comment about Donald Trump to Rosie. She spent months on the show supporting Rosie through the Trump episodes...saying how unfair he was for the low blow attacks. And then in the heat of an argument, she says, "I guess it is easier to fight with Donald Trump, etc..." That to me, was showing a little bit of her true colors. It's hard to support someone in a situation...and then, in an argument...throw it up there in their face. I was ashamed of her for doing that.
9. I think because Rosie is so outspoken...people forget how sensitive of a person she can be, we all can. I don't know how I would handle people constantly saying things about me...especially about my appearance. It's sad that those who disagree with Rosie...the first line of attack...is calling her a fat, lesbian. Why? Because they know it hurts. And that is what Donald Trump's biggest argument was...and Elizabeth throwing that at her, just broke my heart.
10. The rest of the show was also so uncomfy and weird to watch. It was complete elephant in the room...with Rosie and Elizabeth chatting up the Dancing with The Stars folks, etc. I mean...congrats...cause they behaved as professionals instead of storming off, but good lord...and those poor guests, they just didn't know what to do.
11. I watched Elizabeth on the internet last night...with the show Extra. And I will say, I thought she handled that interview with class. I think Elizabeth regrets what happened on tv...and that she truly is Rosie's friend. Who knows how they will work it out, but I just think the whole situation is sad...not that they had the conversation, but that we were all witness to it. Elizabeth said she hoped that her friendship with Rosie was stronger than one, bad fight.
12. I gotta wonder what Barbara Walters will have to say about it, if she is on The View today. I can't imagine she is happy.
13. Once again, shame on you to the producers of The View. They could have taken an opportunity to go on the higher ground...and cut to a commercial. The other hosts were asking for it...it was needed. But, well...drama equals ratings...and so they kept on it..and then split screened the two women. yes, I have spent 13 items talking about it...so, maybe I am a hypcrit, but in reality...I wish they would have cut away and let these women handle it in private. They started a conversation, but then it got personal and nasty...The View should have been the bigger person and cut away. To me, that would be the producers supporting their talent. And think of it, if they did...I would be writing a TT about the last 13 movies I watched and what I thought of them.

Alright...enough about Rosie and Elizabeth and The View.

Thirteen Random Things about Shelley

1. I decided to not have a theme this week...and just randomly list anything going on in my life this week.
2. The services for my mom were last Friday. They were really nice. I saw a lot of people I haven't seen in years...and got to spend some time with friends and family...smiling and telling great stories about mom.
3. My brother and his family left on Monday. You know...my brother and I didn't always get along as kids, but I really enjoy who he is as a person as an adult. I wish we lived closer...so we could see each other more often. And his son...the cutest, smartest human being on the planet.
4. I went back to work on Tuesday. Part of me liked setting into a regular routine.
5. I have found some old friends recently online....mainly through myspace. I found some high school, some college and a friend from grad school. It's been nice to get to know some old friends again. I often lose contact, so I am really happy to reconnect.
6. If you have myspace and wanna be my friend...let me know. I am slowly growing my myspace friends.
7. P.S. If I don't know who you are...I tend not to add you as my myspace friend...so send me a message telling me just how cool you are!
8. I absolutely cannot believe that Melinda got sent home on American Idol. I think she isn't as commercial as some of the others, but who can deny that voice...and her bubbly, sweet personality. I didn't watch, but I was shocked to see on the news that she was sent packing.
9. I now completely want Blake to win American Idol. He's cute and different.
10. I need to refocus on eating right and exercising, etc....I was doing well and then just didn't prioritize it when my mom died. But in reality...if nothing else, my mom's death reminds me to live my life to the fullest...which means that I need to be healthy to do that.
11. I want to start hiking again. I am going to pick some smaller peaks and start there. Wanna come with?
12. My roommate took part of her test to become an EMT this past weekend. She passed...did very well. She has been taking an EMT course all year long. She has her final test (written portion) tonight...so cross your fingers and wish her luck!
13. Today completely does not feel like Thursday. I completely forgot what day it was until I saw a friend's Thursday Thirteen. I didn't work on Monday, so every day has felt like a day behind.

Thirteen Things About Shelley And Being Healthy!

As my blog reads...I am focused back on all things fitness related, so I thought I would share 13 tid bits about Shelley and being healthy!

1. I have consistently tried to change my language when I talk about weight loss and dieting...mainly...stop saying weight loss and dieting. I try to talk about health and fitness and choices, etc. I know that until I see it as powerful long beyond losing weight and inches...I won't truly be getting anywhere.
2. Having said that...losing weight is always still a part of my goal. I want to look better, but I also want to be stronger and healthier...and being at a lower weight is crucial to that.
3. I signed up for a walking challenge at work...and one through Women's Day. I am excited about that. I have been wearing my pedometer every single day and tracking my steps. I have gotten at least 10,000 steps everyday...which is great since I work at a desk job.
4. I have been walking with a co-worker of mine during our 15 minute breaks. It's nice to have a break from the office, do something healthy and have someone I like to chit chat with.
5. I have really come to terms with how much of an emotional eater I am. I know that I cover things with food...and many of my thoughts about food are actually quite OCD. I think I was in denial about this before...and was a big part of my problem.
6. Speaking of food...I am loving the food I am eating lately. I have been making fresh, frothy protein shakes. I have been making homemade sorbet. I have been eating lots of salad, etc.
7. I was talking with a co-worker yesterday...eating well doesn't mean eating things that taste like cardboard. I think when we make ourselves misreable for the benefit of a diet...we fail. I love the food I eat. It's colorful and flavorful. It's something that I really savor. Except for watching portion controls and such...I really don't feel like I am on a diet when I am eating right.
8. There I go saying diet again...sheesh!
9. My eating habits and such...is such a genetic/family thing. Both of my parents have type 2 diabetes and my mom has unfortunately had a lot of complications because of it. In many ways...it's my motivation. I know I have to take care of my body today, so that it takes of me tomorrow.
10. I had a mini-revelation last night...I ended up eating way more than I planned. I ate tons of goldfish crackers...and some M&Ms, etc. But then I thought about...if I ate some crackers and a couple of handfuls of M&Ms...is that the end of the world? Nope. I didn't order a pizza...and almost eat it all. So, even in little mis-steps...I did well. I was proud of myself.
11. I am going to give mad props to my Magic Bullet once again. I just think the world of the thing...and it has helped me make yummy healthy food...that I know exactly what is in it...because I am the one making it. Mmm..mmm...good!
12. I really enjoying blogging about health and fitness. It gives me something to be accountable to...and I have found some like friends out there in the world wide web. I was never someone who wanted to go to meetings, but I like checking in on smoe internet friends...and having them check in on me.
13. Last tid bit...if I stop blogging about anything health-wise...it probably means I am slipping and eating pizza instead of blogging. Call me on it, mkay??? lol

Interview Me!

Hey everybody....TC had this "Interview Me" thing over at her site and she asked if anyone wanted to play along....and of course, I am always game. She asked me these 5 questions, here are my answers.

1) You are currently trying to lose weight. What is your diet/exercise
plan? What words of wisdom would you have to share.

Yes, I am trying to lose weight. To be altogether honest it has been a struggle all of my life, but in reality...I have only tried to do something about since about 2000 or so. I just got fed up with being heavy and unhealthy...and how it was limiting my life. I have lost and gained weight since then...and been successful and then fell off that lovely wagon. It's so hard...sometimes.

My plan...well, my plan changes ALL the time. I am always tweeking it a little here...a little there, but when you get down to it...the nuts and bolts of my plan is eat less, move more. I track what I eat...I eat about every three hours...and I eat high volume, high quality foods. I also look to workout (cardio and weights) 3-5 times a week.

Words of wisdom? For someone who has had success and had stumbling blocks...I often wonder if I have any. For me, it's a head game. It's not about the food and the exercise...it's about the negative messages I give myself about my health, my body, etc. And that's the tough work and it's the stuff that trips me up all the time. So, if I had any word of wisdom is that to look inside while you are changing the outside.

2) You are a vegetarian. How long have you been one? What motivated this
decision?

I sure am. I have been a vegetarian since the year 2000...at least in some sort. I begame veggie in 2000...had a couple slip ups and then in 2001, I became a veggie girl for good...not a bit of meat has touched my lips since then. I am not vegan, but I am a 100% vegetarian...no fish, no chicken, etc. I don't eat gelatin (animal product), I don't buy leather shoes, etc.

My motivation...at first it was diet. It makes sense that I became veggie and starting looking at weight loss at the same time. But quickly it became about animal rights issues. I just don't find it necessary to eat living animals to sustain myself. Now, I am not obnoxious about it...I don't judge anyone else's decision to eat meat...but for me, it just isn't an option. And people have asked, I can't ever see myself eating meat again...ever.

3) Do you remember what you wanted to be when you grew up when you were 5,
10, and 20?

When I was 5 I wanted to be a dancer...I was dancing at the time and thought it would be the best career ever. I some grew up and realized what kind of profession it actually is...and I ended up quitting dancing so I could be home on Thursday nights and watch The Cosby Show (I just think that's hilarious).
At 10: Hmm...I don't know. I think I just wanted to play and skin my knees and be a kid. No ambition at all.
At 20: Well, that's about when I actually saw my career...I was volunteering in homeless centers and soup kitchens. I was getting politically active and voicing that I was a feminist, etc. It's the first time I could see myself as a social worker, as a political organizer. Before 20, I wanted to be a teacher...and then I saw that I could teach in other ways.

4) You enjoy going to movies. What was the earliest movie you remember
seeing in a theatre? Have you ever been to a drive-in? How many movies do
you own?

Love movies...just love escaping into someone else's world for a bit. I remember going to see Star Wars-maybe Return of the Jedi...and my brother getting so scared (he's 2 years older), he put the bucket of popcorn over his head to shield his eyes. I would have been 6 at the time. I am sure I saw movies earlier, but that's my first movie memory.

Yep, love drive-ins...one, cause they are cheap and two, cause they are fun (minus the bugs). I went last year...or maybe the summer before. I went to see War of The World and Mr. and Mrs. Smith, so it must have been the summer before.

I barely own any movies...since I am the cheapest person alive. I rent, not own. I own...15 movies or so. I have to REALLY love a movie to own it.

5) You are granted three wishes - what would they be?
One- the end to hunger and poverty. I think it's one of the greatest injustices of the world...how so many people live in constant poverty. We have the ability for everyone to have food and shelter, but it's the haves and the have nots. It's just a devastation problem to me...and one that a capitalist society unfortunately needs in order to function and sustain itself.
Two- the end to the war in Iraq. This war breaks my heart, so I would want it to end and have the nation and the world start to heal.
Three- I'll make one personal...I would like to wake up and not have that nagging voice in my head that I talked about up there...I would like to have confident and esteem with my body, health and weight. I just can't imagine that freedom.

Ok..now that you officially know that I am long winded. Phew. Sorry...and thanks to everyone who is still reading this.

And...If anyone else wants to play along:

Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."
I will respond by asking you five questions. I get to pick the questions.
You will update your weblog with the answers to the questions.
You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same post.
When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.

Thursday Thirteen #27

I was sick last week, so I didn't even get close to a post...but this week...only a trickle of a cough left over, so here's my TT! Enjoy!

Thirteen Random Things about Shelley!

1. I am a redhead...pretty much. It's a dark, brownish red, but it's still red. I call it auburn cause it just seems classier. I hated my red hair as a kid, but now...we get along famously.
2. I am afraid of clowns. Now, I don't run in fear if I see one and hide under the desk, but I don't like them...they make me uncomfortable. I think it is that you can't see the person behind the makeup. *shudders*
3. I am also afraid of spiders. I think they are nasty and tricky. They move too fast and the feeling of one running across you...eww!
4. I don't like reading anymore...it's really quite sad. I used to love reading as a kid, but being in college and grad school just trained me that reading is just to get an assignment done. So, if I do read...I try to read as fast as possible and make myself misreable while doing it.
5. I have no money in my wallet right now. Actually, I never do. I use my debit card for everything! For me, if I have cash...I spent it on nothing and everything, but I am very particular about everything I use my debit card on.
6. I went to Blockbuster on Tuesday...when the new releases come out...to get one of them. When I got there at 4:45pm...I was grabbing the last copy of the movie. How crazy is that? (BTW- the movie was Smoking Aces. I search out anything Affleck related!)
7. I used to be so much more politically active when I was younger...I would attend protests and meetings and contact my elected officials. I miss those days. I have tried to get involved again, but it has never really worked out. I should really work on that because there are so many issues I care about.
8. I often wonder if I will be battling with my weight my entire life. I seem to be falling in the category of the constant yo-yo.
9. I wonder if I will battle with my weight until I finally accept and love myself...just the way I am. (blatant Bridget Jones reference there!)
10. The shooting at VA Tech has just completely broken my heart. I can't imagine how that community is ever going to heal...especially with all the new information coming out.
11. I have some really great friends...and sometimes I think I don't appreciate them like I should. I have some great work friends...who make work SO worth while. It's not the job I love...it's the people. I have some great friends from college...who I don't talk to nearly as much as I should. And some great around town, just regular friends...who I wish I got to see more often.
12. Spending time with my family in Florida was really wonderful. My parents have thanked me for going along because they said I was really helpful. That felt nice...and you know, we just do what family does. But for me...it was great. I obviously loved seeing my adorable nephew, but I also loved spending time with my family as an adult...not as the child. I guess that's a huge difference when you are the baby in the family. So, the vacation was really, really wonderful.
13. Jeez...I always tend to use my TT's for a replacement for therapy, eh? Oh well...get it where you need it!

Thursday Thirteen #26

Thirteen Things Shelley Has Done Since Heading to Florida!

1. Before leaving on Sunday...I spent the night at my parents since we were leaving at 3am. I watched Children of Men before going to bed. I thought I would love it, but I didn't...I just didn't get it.
2. We left right on time at 3am. It was uber early, but I slept a good deal in the car.
3. We stopped at South of the Border. I remember being so excited by it when I was a kid. It's cheesy, but it's such a tradition when driving to Florida. We just stopped on through...and my dad took a picture of me where it looks like this huge sombrero is on top of my head. I'd post a picture of it, but then I would have to kill you all.
4. We stayed at a motel just about an hour past South of the Border...and we found a really cheap room, so I got my own room. It was such a good investment...I slept so so well.
5. We started off the next day at about 8am...and got in to my brother's at about 4pm. We stopped at my parents' motel...and then headed to my brother's.
6. My nephew is officially the cutest person on the planet. I have never met him...and he was so personable...immediately wanting to play.
7. I might have lost about 50 lbs...running around and playing with him. It's been the best time ever.
8. He calls me ti ti shelley. tia is the name for aunt in spanish. He'll wake up in the morning and say, "ti ti...come and play in my room!"
9. We went out for breakfast at Perkin's....it's a great place where you get tons of food. Mmmmmm!!!
10. We went to Sea World yesterday....it was fun and tiring. We fed the sea lions...they were such hams and would do tricks to get the food. By the time we left...my nephew was exhausted...fell asleep in my brother's arms.
11. Oh yeah...my brother is a rock star and fixed my computer. He's awesome since my computer hasn't worker in about two months. He's the best.
12. Did I mention I have been sleeping in my nephew's room...i call it my room...and then he says, "No, it's my room!!!"
13. We've done a million other things....but it's time for me to go play in his room...so cya when I get back!

Thirteen Things Shelley Needs to Do Before Going on VACATION!

1. Find the warm weather clothes. All I have been doing is weating sweaters and turtlenecks lately.
2. Do a bunch of laundry.
3. Pay all of the upcoming bills while I will be away.
4. Go to the mall and buy some new, summery clothes. I need some shirts and maybe a new pair of lightweight jeans. I could also use a nice new pair of sandles too.
5. Borrow my roommates portable DVD player, so I can watch some movies when my parents are driving me bonkers.
6. Go grocery shopping to get some snack food for the trip.
7. Go into the Tivo and delete a bunch of stuff I had set to record...since it will get deleted anyways before I get home.
8. Watch about 5 movies, so I can return them to Blockbuster before I go to sunny Florida.
9. Buy a nice easter basket for my nephew.
10. Find my digital camera...since I haven't used it in a bajillion years.
11. Do a quick clean of the apartment. I hate coming home from a long trip to a messy place.
12. Close out all my work files before I leave...and leave my office so that my secretary can actually find something if she needs to.
13. Get a walkman/mp3 player so I can listen to music on the trip...and at night while my parents are snoring away!

Think good thoughts for me...on the trip down and back. And I can't wait to get there and see my cute as a button nephew...oh yeah, my brother and his wife too!

Thirteen Things Shelley Has In Her Bag/Makeshift Purse

I am a complete pack rat, so I thought this would be a good TT...the stuff in my purse (it's not really a purse...it's a bag, a big clunky bag). Sometimes I feel like Alley Sheedy in the Breakfast Club with all the stuff in my bag.

1. A Hannaford Bag with my lunch in it (frozen dinner, orange, yogurt, a protein shake, etc).
2. A bottle of water...actually I have two in there.
3. The bill for my dentist...I need to remind myself to send it to Aflac.
4. My checkbook...for which I paid bills with this morning (Yeah! I got paid!)
5. A scarf...I love this scarf, it's warm and not too itchy.
6. A pair of gloves....to keep my little digits warm.
7. A small bottle of Grapefruit Boby Splash from Bath and Body Works...so good!
8. A pair of sunglasses.
9. A folder from a time management seminar I went to.
10. A reminder for the Diabetes Walk...in SEPTEMBER!
11. A bottle of Excedrin Migraine...just in case.
12. Some of my business cards.
13. And another orange...couldn't tell ya.

Can you tell that I might not be the most organized person on the planet????

Thirteen Things Shelley Would Have Done If She Won the 370 Million Dollar Lottery!!

Hey...I didn't even play the lottery, but here is what I would have done with the winnings if I magically did win.

1. I'd take the lump sum and then immediately pay the taxes on it...so figure I would end up with about half.
2. I would pay off my school loans...and my brother's school loans...and probably and student loans of my friends. I am not going to pay off a bunch of people's debt, but I believe in education...so I would consider paying that off for people in my life.
3. I would pay off my parents' mortgage.
4. I would buy a house for little ol' me...a basic, normal, run of the mill house. I would be one of those people who bought a multi-million dollar home...just a normal basic house.
5. I would also pay off my brother and his wife's house.
6. I would put 5 million dollars in trust for my nephew.
7. I would buy my parents a house in Florida so they could live there for part of the year and be close to my brother.
8. I would buy a car. I would buy a mini cooper. I just think they are adorably cute....and gas efficient, etc. I would keep my grand am, but also get the coop for driving around town.
9. I would buy my dad a new truck or whatever kind of car he wants. He's been driving a beat up truck for long enough now.
10. I would learn how to fly a plane. I've always wanted to, but it just seemed so impractical.
11. I would buy a small plane once I knew how to fly it.
12. I would invest my monies wisely...and hope to continue to live off the interest for the rest of my life.
13. I would consider quitting my job...but only to start a local non-profit. There is no local shelter for adults here and I think it is hugely lacking. I would start a local homeless organization that offered shelter, transitional housing and a day center.

Thursday Thirteen #22

I am glad that TT is continuing...I would have missed it if it ended...one, I like random different coming to my blog and vice versa....and two, it's a nice way to get those creative juices flowing when it comes to writing.

Thirteen Things Shelley Has Spent $$$$ on In the Last Month

I am the cheapest person alive, so I thought I would clue y'all in on some of the things I spent my money on in the last month or so.

1. My usual bills...the rent, the cable, the utility bill, my student loans, etc.
2. Dental bills. I got all the work done...and of course it ain't for free.
3. Some groceries....about 20 to 30 bucks a week at little ol' Hannaford.
4. The Windows XP Professional that I bought off ebay.
5. Some hair stuff like mousse and the like at Target...and I looked at clothes while I was there, but didn't buy anything.
6. My gym membership...that I haven't used nearly as much as I should.
7. A new wireless internet card...in hopes of solving some of my computer problems.
8. A pizza from the local pizza joint...mmm...it was good.
9. Take out dinner at Panera twice...about $7.00 each time. Soup in a sourdough bread bowl. It's awesome.
10. An oil change, air filter and car wash for my car...set me back about 50 bucks.
11. Filled up my gas tank...twice.
12. I took 40 bucks out of the ATM...I couldn't tell you what I spent it on.
13. Online membership for Blockbuster...for a little more than 15 bucks a month...it is definitely worth it.

So basically....I pay my bills...eat out a little bit...go to the gym (or at least pay for it), take care of my car, try to fix my computer and watch lotsa movies.

Thursday Thirteen #21

The website says that this will be the final edition of TT...unless someone else buys the rights to it. That's sad that a community of people and something people will enjoy...will come down to money. Well...if this is it, it was fun while it lasted.

P.S. I woke up a smidge ago...and I am feeling better. I got to the point when my temp went back to normal and I just feel like I can't sleep any more.

Thirteen Things About Shelley And Money!

1. I have a love/hate relationship with money, but then again...doesn't everyone?
2. When I entered college...I had close to 2K in savings from my job in high school.
3. I got my first credit card when I was 18 years old...my mommy co-signed for me.
4. By the time I graduated from college, I had about 2K in credit card debt. And sadly, it was just from living beyond my means.
5. That 2K completely freaked me out. It may not seem like a lot to some, but for me...it seemed like a bottomless hole.
6. When I started grad school, I vowed to reduce my debt and once I paid off the cards to never have a credit card balance.
7. I paid off all my cards in 2003...and to this day have never paid a penny in interest in credit cards again.
8. When I graduated from grad school...I was once again saddled in debt, but school loans. It's healthy debt, but I still hate it. When I went to my exit interview...they student loan people gave me a chart saying that if you owe this much you should make this much per year. I laughed out loud when I saw this because as a social worker I was NEVER going to make what the chart says I should.
9. Since I have graduated from grad school in 2002...I have paid down over 25K in educational debt. (sadly that is not even half of what I owe for both undergrad and grad school) This afternoon I made a 2K payment to one of my loans. I figured that it makes more sense to pay that money off instead of just keeping it in an account...getting a smidge of interest.
10. I am lucky to have really good credit. I saw lucky, but really it was a lot of self discipline and hard work. I haven't always had a lot of money, but I have paid bills on time and not gotten overwhelmed.
11. I paid off my car lst year...2.5 years early. I am really proud of that. And now the money I used to pay for my car loans...I send to my student loans.
12. Right now I am on schedule to be debt free by 2010. That seems like a long time away, but if I only paid what they told me to...my loans would be paid in full on 2033. That's right 2033!!!
13. I know much of this post seems like I am bragging...and well, I probably am. I am really proud of the financial decisions I have made. I have a journey ahead of me, but I love that I have a plan and I am making choices to help my financial future instead of just hiding under a rock!

Thirteen Things about Shelley And SNOW!

1. I love snow. I sometimes consider it my BFF.
2. It reminds me of being a kid...playing in it, praying for a snow day.
3. We got a HUGE snow storm yesterday...all in all...about 3 feet fell to the ground.
4. My office closed at noon...and I headed immediately home.
5. I drove VERY slow and when I pulled into my apartment complex...the guy behind me blew by me and beeped his horn at me. Alright...asshat...but don't blame me when you find yourself in a ditch.
6. At about 4pm, I went out to move some snow off my car and maybe move it...and when I did, I realized it was COVERED with snow and not going to move without a lot of work.
7. And...I didn't have a shovel because my apartment complex is supposed to do snow removal. (notice I said supposed to)
8. Luckily...my daddy came over and brought me a shovel and helped me move my car out.
9. It took a little less than an hour.
10. And...I also shoveled the walkway, etc...since it has been a long time and many feet ago that my apartment complex did that.
11. I also jumped in the snow and made a snow chair on my way back into the building. See...even when it is a pain in the ass...it's still fun!
12. This morning...I shoveled out my car again, got it all warmed up and was about the head to work...and then, when I tried to knock the snow off my wipers...the driver's side wiper just fell off my car. So...who knows if I am going to work today. I am trying to get someone to get one to me...but who knows? It might end up being another snow day for Shelley. UPDATE (8:20AM: I got a ride to work...so I am going, not sure how I am getting home...but it's all good!)
13. By the way...I still fully *heart* snow.

Thirteen Things That Have Made Shelley Happy This Week!

1. The Colts won the Superbowl...which is awesome since I adore Peyton and basically any Indiana team.
2. The superbowl commercials were actually funny and didn't suck like they have the past few years.
3. Prince was out singing in the rain...which I found hilarious...and that he was basically wearing a bonnet that made him look like Aunt Jemima!
4. I didn't end up going to church this weekend. How sad it is that it is something that made me happy? But well...it was a great chance to sleep in. I needed that since I had to work on Saturday.
5. I also got to take half a day off of work yesterday...to make up for working on Saturday. It was nice to have the afternoon to myself.
6. I turned in some lotto tickets (scratch off) which were given to me as a Christmas gift...and won 9 dollars. whoo hoo...free money!
7. I bought a slushie with one of those 9 dollars. It's been freezing lately, but that doesn't mean I stop loving slushies!
8. I also have a half day on Friday to make a site visit for work...but it will be nice to be out on the road.
9. I signed up for Blockbuster's All Access movie deal...which basically works like Netflix, except you can return the movies to the store and get more movies! I love that plan...and I signed up on Monday and already had movies in my mailbox on Wednesday.
10. One of those movies is Hollywoodland...which I have been really excited to see. I am going to either watch it tonight or Friday.
11. Lost was on TV last night...after a long awaited absence. DON'T TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED!!! I have it Tivo'ed and haven't watched it yet.
12. I'll be honest....Hershey's Kissables Candies...bring me happiness!
13. And...I have received all my 1099's and W2's and such in the mail now...so I can get to filing my taxes and getting that return back.

That's 13 things that have made me happy this week....happy, happy everywhere!

Thirteen Reality TV Shows That Shelley Watches!

I know...it's quite sad that I know I can list 13 reality shows that I watch. I always say that reality tv is trash...and often it is, but sadly...I also really enjoy it. Here goes my list!

1. Top Chef-BRAVO. I love this show. I wish I knew how to cook and I love to watch what they make and the drama of it all. The finale was on last night and thank god that Ilan won! I wanted Sam to win...because he is dreamy and because I felt his dishes were fabulous. I just think this show is great...and can't wait for season 3!
2. Project Runway- BRAVO. I loved this show before I loved Top Chef. I think it is fabulous and the designer drama is just wonderous! And...they often make such beautiful dresses too! Nick was my favorite from Season two...thought he should have won. I was so glad when Jeffrey won last season...even though Kayne was my favorite by far!
3. Dancing With The Stars- ABC. Love it! I love that the people actually have to learn a skill instead of just being drama queens. I also think that the dancing is just so beautiful. Who did I think should have won last season? Mario...absolutely....and not just because I watched Saved By The Bell as a kid!
4. So You Think You Can Dance?- Fox. Can you tell I like the dancing shows? I used to dance all the time as a kid...ballet, tap, jazz, etc. This one is a little different because they are actual dancers, not celebrities...and some of the dances are just breathtaking to watch. Who did I want to win last year? Travis...all the way. He made it to finals, but was beat by Benji. I loved Benji, but not like I loved Travis.
5. Celebrity Fit Club- VH1. I used to watch Biggest Loser, but I don't really anymore....because I think it shows an unrealistic view of weightloss. That is why I like CFC. They show realistic, slow weight loss...focused on diet and exercise. Plus...it's great to watch those B level celebrities struggles with weight and body issues just like the rest of us.
6. Workout- BRAVO. I started watching this show when it premiered last year. I think it's great. It's about the trainers at an LA gym...and their semi-crazy, little bitchy boss. I like that they show success and struggles of the clients they work with...but also show the lives of the trainers. I'll be looking forward to watching season two this spring.
7. Real World- MTV. I don't even like The Real World anymore...but I still watch it. I remember 10+ years ago...when the people on the show were somewhat average, normal. Now...it is just finding the trashiest, slutiest, racist, judgemental people ever...and putting them in a fish bowl to hook up with one another and fight constantly. But...much like a car accident...I just can't look away when it comes to the Real World. Oh...and I love those challenges too.
8. Wife Swap- ABC. Between Trading Spaces and Wife Swap...I like Wife Swap. It's always interesting to see two different types of families and how they function together for 2 weeks. What is most interesting to me...is not the drama in the beginning, but what the family learns afterwards. I am always amazed that the families seem to take the best from the other family and incorporate it into their lives. Trading Spaces seems to be all about the drama...Wife Swap has some drama, but I see it more about the experience.
9. American Idol-FOX. Alright, I admit it...I watch it. I always watch it during the beginning weeks because I am thoroughly entertained by the trainwreck auditions. I usually stop watching once it gets into a full blown competition...except last year. I was really mesmerized by Chris Daughtry...loved that bald rocker. And once Chris went home...I really started to love Taylor. I thought he was fabulous and something completely different. I was really happy to have him win. I don't know if I will keep watching AI after the audition weeks this year...we'll have to wait and see.
10. Intervention- A&E. This show is realistic, fabulous...and also breaks my heart. I think it sheds some light on addiction and what people go through. I also think that it shows how hard recovery is...since the people often relapse after treatment. These are really little mini-documentaries on addiction...with the added benefit of providing the opportunity for treatment for those involved. Check it out if you get the chance.
11. What Not To Wear- TLC. I secretly want to be on this show...I know my fashion isn't the best and I would love 5K and the advice of some NYC fashion divas to get some nice, new digs. Now...the circular mirror and the mountain of shame...not so much, but the new clothes...absolutely. My only problem...I would never let them through away ALL my clothes because realistically...5K doesn't buy that much clothes, especially in NYC.
12. Trading Spaces- TLC. I haven't watched this as much as I used to...but I still love it. I think it's a great idea...2 couples making over each other's rooms. And...sometimes it is such a beautiful room...and sometimes I think the designers are on crack with what they come up with. If I owned my own house...I would love to be on this show as well.
13. Inked- A&E. I love this show....if I was ever in Vegas and wanted another tattoo, I would get it there. I love, love, love...Dizzle!

and the sad thing...I could list more reality shows that I might watch!

Thursday Thirteen #17

Thirteen Things about Fitness in Shelley's Life!

1. I just joined the YMCA...and I plan on using it. I am not wasting $37 dollars each and every month!
2. I love the Y's step classes and plan on signing up in the spring session.
3. I am paying myself $1 for each hour that I spend at the Y....as a way to make sure that I go and to reward myself for doing so.
4. I am working on eating a raw food diet.
5. I can no way eat raw 100% of the time...at least right now. I only eat raw up until dinner time.
6. The only downside...I get hungrier than I used to eating raw. By the time I leave work I am starving.
7. I think it is because the foods I eat now are so much easier to break down.
8. I have started to plan a snack for right after work, so I don't eat myself out of house and home.
9. I did find the one day I spent a lot of time at the Y...I didn't overeat at all. That is definitely something to remember.
10. I still love my elliptical..I haven't abandoned her. I still use it when I can't get to the Y.
11. I want to try to Couch to 5K program again...I have tried it twice before and always quit to go to another fitness routine. Since the Y has an indoor track, I think I should give it another go.
12. I still have 35 pounds I want to lose...and don't like that I spent November and December gaining weight.
13. However, I am very proud of my fitness level and that I didn't DIE when I stepped on the elliptical machine at the Y for the first time. I am overweight, but I am still healthier than I was before I started all this. That's something that I carry onto when I struggle or get frustrated.
